Peanuts by Paper Mache

Ok so for the Candy Land section Peanut Acres, I am making giant peanuts, which I have done by paper mache. All you need is:

balloons
sytrofoam bowls
brown paint
a paint brush
paper towels
newspaper to lay down
a cup with water for your paint brush
a needle or something sharp

For the paper mache-
newspaper strips cut about a half inch wide
Flour 1 part
Water 2 parts

Alright the first step is to blow up the balloons so that they will fit inside the bowls. You will then want to mix your paper mache paste, which is one cup flour, two cups water. It will create a paste. You will need two balloons, and two bowls to create each peanut.

Then you are going to paper mache each of the balloons seperately. You do this by placing one newspaper strip into the paste and wrapping it around the balloon. You don't want there to be excessive paste on the newspaper strip, so if there is, just take your fingers and run it down the newspaper strip to get the excess off.
IMAG1891.jpgI did two complete layers of paper mache, per balloon. Then you are going to set those aside and let them dry for 24 hours. Once you are sure that the balloons have dried, you are going to want to enter a needle, or something sharp to carefully pop the balloon. Then you are going to place both balloons into the styrofoam plates, with their tips facing each other.
IMAG1982.jpg After you have done this, you are going to want to paper mache the entire thing, so you will need extra long newspaper strips for this part. You will want to do extra strips in the middle so that it holds it together like a peanut shell.
Then you are going to let that dry for 24 hours, and it should look like this.
IMAG1984.jpg This is where you are going to paint the peanut. I used brown acrylic paint in coffee bean, but you can use any brown paint that you like. IMAG1985.jpg Or if you want colorful peanut shells, you can use bright colors. You want to make sure you paint both sides, and then you are going to let it dry, and there you have it, giant peanut shells, which I am going to shatter along Peanut Acres with my peanut bushes (coming later) and Gramma Nuts House.

  1. I am planning a BIG Candyland Party for my daugters bday. For some reason, your pics aren't loading on the peanut paper mache. I would love to see what yours looks like, if you can get this issue fixed before august. Thanks!!!
